This task assesses your skills of conducting register analysis with the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) approach. In this part, you will perform a register analysis on the two texts and identify the lexical and grammatical elements of the written and spoken text and interpret the texts in relation to their context. You should show how the social roles and relationships (tenor), subject matter (field) and the nature of the text as a communicative event (mode) influence and are reflected in particular aspects of grammar and vocabulary in each text. In other words, you need to explain how language is both shaping and shaped by the social world in the two texts with the SFL register analysis. Refer to Unit 8 for directions on how to perform a register analysis. Use the scheme for register analysis discussed in Conclusion of Unit 8 (p.45-46) to tabulate evidence from the texts. Apart from illustrating your analysis in tabular form, you are also required to discuss the table(s) in your own words. This task will NOT be marked if you present your findings only in tabular form. You MUST include accompanying texts which explain the significant findings of your analysis.
