I believe you all have experience writing a research paper, so in lieu of an actual instruction sheet, I am placing directions here. (Additional resources follow below.)
You may write about anything whatsoever as long as it appears in our textbook. (If you’re writing about poetry, go ahead and look forward on the course schedule and begin reading and taking notes.) You’re also free to determine your own purpose and topic. You may write about more than one text if you wish. Remember: Essays 2 and 3 are available to you for revision; you may synthesize research into one of these essays and add content and revise accordingly.
Consider your audience to be people such as your family, friends, classmates, coworkers, neighbors, etc, all who represent a wide range of experience and education, but since you’ll be incorporating research into this essay, presume they have a stake in reading it. They either want to learn something, or they crave insight into the material. You don’t necessarily want to presume that they’re familiar with the text(s), but you should avoid the tendency to over-summarize (spoilers are okay). Get your audience interested enough to go out and find the text for themselves.
Remember to utilize third-person language only. (If there is first and/or second-person language in quotations, that is okay.)

The essay should follow MLA guidelines and be at least 5-6 pages in length. It will require a works cited page (which does not count toward the final page count). You should include at least three sources for your paper; our textbook may appear as one source. You will also be required to utilize in-text citation for any quotes, summaries, or paraphrases. Please reference your MLA Handbook or the “MLA 8th Ed Formatting & Style Guide” available on Canvas (at “Files/Resources/MLA/Updated 8th Ed Style”).
Remember: There are sample MLA formatted research papers on Canvas at “Files/Resources/MLA/Sample Papers.” You may also want to review “Writing About Literature” (36-75) as there’s great information and advice there. You may find “The Research Paper” (59-70) and “Some Matters of Form and Documentation” (71-75) of particular importance. And, of course, there are various other resources available to you on Canvas (“Files/Resources”). Please spend a little time browsing the files and folders.
I encourage everyone to carefully read Writing a Literary Analysis Paper Download Writing a Literary Analysis Paper . It offers clear instructions and advice for writing a literary analysis essay. You may also want to visit A step-by-step guide to literary analysis (Links to an external site.). There’s good advice there too (just remember to adhere to MLA guidelines). Please note: Your draft of Essay 4 is due for out-of-class peer review/workshop during week 14 (ideally by Tu 1207). (There is no need to submit a draft to me or Canvas.) Please work with a fellow student, friend, family member, or tutor on your draft.
The Researched Literary Analysis Essay is due by 11:59pm on Th 1216.
