For this assignment, you will collect real world information that is relevant to social psychology. This project is an opportunity for you to apply the principles from class to real-world events and information. Be creative! Examples of social psychology are everywhere, once you start looking for them. Start early and be on the look out for examples as you go about your daily activities.
Your portfolio can be made up of newspaper articles, magazine articles, advertisements, comic strips, photographs, advice columns, or anything else pertaining to social-psychology. For example, we will use several cartoons in lecture to illustrate several different concepts. (No, items included in your text or from class cannot be used for your portfolio!) You may use song lyrics, if you provide the text of the lyrics, the artist, and the album title. You may also include information from TV or a movie if you provide the name of the program, and brief descriiption of the program, commercial or scene. I am NOT looking for articles discussing research. However, you may include popular press articles that inadvertently illustrates a social psychological concept. You will hand in the portfolio 2 times through- out the semester. These will be posted to Blackboard. You should complete 3 new entries for each collection period (different examples each time you turn it in. You will receive up to 30 points at each collection period, for a total of 60 points.
Each entry should include all three of the following:
A copy or descriiption original source material (e.g., the cartoon, article, etc.), with complete information about the source (e.g., the name of the publication, the date of publication, page numbers). No more than one source that is descriiption only. If documentation is not provided your portfolio will be returned to you and will be considered late.
A definition of the social psychological concept being illustrated. You are encouraged to use material from the lectures and readings in defining concepts, but do not use direct quotes from the text or lecture. I already know that the textbook’s authors understand it, I am looking for evidence that you understand the concept. Therefore, you should be able to define the concept in your own words. You will NOT receive credit for a definition that is simply copied from the text, even if it is cited correctly.
A critical evaluation of how the item relates to the course concepts and how it differs. Use the definition to back up what you are arguing. I am looking for evidence that you can explain the links between your material and course concepts. It need not fit the concepts perfectly but you should be able to explain how it fits and how it differs. You should also be able to link the main concept you are discussing to other related concepts. For example, if your concept is attribution is it internal or external. Is the person displaying a fundamental attribution error? Are they processing in an automatic or controlled fashion? And why do you think that this is the case? Use the research and course material to support your opinion. Also include the ethnic group context of the item and how it influences the construct in question.
I expect your portfolio to be your own work–both finding the materials and describing them. Copying materials or explanations from your classmates or others is plagiarism. You may not include more than one item on the same topic. That is, you may not turn in two entries displaying the false consensus effect but you may turn in two cartoons displaying two DIFFERENT concepts. Appropriate topics, are concepts from readings or lectures from the portion of the class cover during that collection period. See me if you are unsure if the concept is appropriate.
