The video games narrative includes a sizable amount of profanity, substance use, etc as it is intended for a mature audience of ages 17 and older. Grand Theft Auto V has a plot like no other, where we follow several characters on their journey in the crime world. Michael, one of the main characters, offers to help his old crime planner, Lester, pull off a small jewelry store heist. They commit the robbery with the help of Franklin, a small hustler looking for bigger wins, which then attracts Trevor’s attention. When the three meet up, they devise a series of heists and robberies that would set them up for the rest of their lives. In my analysis of the video game, I will explore my research question, In what ways are the roles of women portrayed in the male-centered world of GTA V?. I will be examining the ways in which women are portrayed in each of the three households as marginal characters. This is quite common in gameplay when, for example, we see how a rich white household contains a traditional nuclear family, a low-society household contains hillbilly characters who are alcoholics and have scrapped clothing and many tattoos, and how in the lower-end parts of the city there is a household consisting of a black man living with his mother who never has a stable relationship. After this examination, I shall be looking at how the user/player themself interacts with female characters in the online and narrative modes. Lastly, I shall explain how the video game addresses the relationship between women and other characters and how the agency of the female characters compare to males, including how stereotyping comes into play.
