Hi, everybody. I’m Dr. Rate. This is just a few of you in right now. I’m going to wait a few minutes and see if anyone else shows up. But I think we’re going to go ahead and kinda get started. Welcome to Human Services 344, career development and appraisal. I think most of you have put been in the blackboard classroom hopefully. Today I’m just gonna kinda go over the course and review everything to make sure that you’re going to be successful in the course. That’s the whole point. I taught the same course. Some of one, most people were very successful. The biggest thing is that you defect, engage with the content and do things ahead of time. Don’t put things off to the last minute so that you miss deadlines, okay? Cuz anything in this course can be done early, but you can’t do anything like so. But I love this course, career development and prayed thought, career effects and work attack. Everyone we know. Especially with the pandemic and everything, it’s had a big impact on almost every person I know employment. So to my daughters were laid off for a while. People have shifted to online. People had to work even though they didn’t want to go to work. Employment, career affect everyone. And I’m sure you guys are here getting your education because you want to enhance your opportunities for work. Or the clear do you currently have you want to be able to do other types of things in your work or you’re looking to change. So this course is going to help us learn a lot about employment career, but also about yourself. Because some of the things we’re going to do in this course, our career type assessments that you’re going to learn about how you might use those with other people, but you’re also going to be taking them yourself. So you’re going to have the opportunity to, to experience some of the things that we’re talking about as well. So, so today I’m really going to be doing an overview of the course. I’m going to talk a little bit and orient you to the course. We’re going to look at the schedule for the summer. Remember this is shimmer to it only runs 5.5 week. So we’re taking everything we do in a normal semester and condensing it. So that means a lot of times you’re going to be doing two or three modules every single week as opposed to just one module. You’re going to be doing all the readings, quizzes, things like that. It’s much more accelerated pace so that, you know, at the end of your advance are going to come really fast. The attachments, you just don’t have that much time do things. In this course. You’re gonna have three big assignments that we’re going to talk about. So we’re going to go over the syllabus and modules, and we just have one discussion board to that. Kinda good. Let’s talk about the quizzes. The quizzes at the end most of the module. And you can attempt the quiz this twice, and then their advance. But you only get attempting fans once. All right, so what I’m gonna do now is I’m going to stop sharing that. We work in modules to go through things and I’ll talk about that. Because it may, at least that’s my picture. You can see me live right now. But the whole point here is that I’m usually online between maybe 84 o’clock. I’m usually a computer working on my computer or I had my smart phone with me. And so I can see when you email me something and I’ll respond to you promptly. If you are working at night, which a lot of people do in this class, like they do stuff in the evening and you have questions, just email me, but realized that I’ll won’t respond until the next day in the morning because I’m usually not online the evening managing our classes. I’d say that for the day because I’m pretty much on the whole day. So I hope that all makes sense. Just email me and I will respond. I don’t think any student whenever say that. I’m not a response to Professor cell. And please ask me any questions that you have. This is our summer schedule. So it’s number 2. It’s going to run today through August 5th. So that’s 5.5 weeks. So it’ll be everything do here in week 1 will be due on Monday at midnight, but the rest of the week, and I’m going to get everything in by time they extend the very last week, which ends on Thursday night. So and the quizzes are helped to make sure that you learn the content of each module. The big things this week are to either attend or submitted summary of this. If you’re here live, you don’t need to submit a summary. If you watch the recording you do. And then post in the discussion board forum. And that complete modules 1 through 3, including the three quizzes. And look ahead because you’re gonna have career assessments due the end of week two. You may want to start those this week, so I’m going to talk about them here in a second. Because the sooner you start, the better. Because they most especially the fifth one, the last one on there, takes a lot of time. But anyway, here’s the schedule. Feel free to print it out if you want. What see the syllabus. So the syllabus just kinda talks about everything that’s required in this course. But the big is our textbook that we’re using. And then your responsibility. So I’m going to go in there also the grading criteria. We have 220 points in this course. Gotta get 203.52 head-neck. Hey, just be aware that the points add up and this is how they’re all divided. I’m going to go in here and we’re just going to talk about the big things that we have in this course. No meeting the filming and we’re going to have it’s being recorded. I’m going to talk about all the assignment so you can go back to it if you have questions on it. But they’re pretty straightforward. Module quizzes. I’ve talked about those each have a quick quiz at the end of every module. You get two attempts on each and the highest score is the score that can be posting the grade book. They’re open book, open, whatever you can. But you just want to make sure what it’s doing is testing the content and the content is what you’re learning. And it’s also going to give you kind of a little bit of practice before you take the exam. Because they advance, are going to be similar formatting of question. There are two exams. They are not comprehensive, so exam one discovers modules one through nine. Check them, traded the textbook. You have two hours for each exam and there’s 50 questions on each chain. But yeah, so you got plenty of time. Those are all open book, but you do have to take Respondus. You have to use the lockdown browser when you’re taking notes. You can’t, but you can have your bookshelf and you could have notes in front of me. Again. But make sure you’ve gone through the content. Make sure you’ve taken all the quizzes. Make sure that you’ve studied before you take the exam. There’s also study guide through the fans. They’re not exhaustive, but they’re pretty good to help you study for the exam to make sure that you know the content that’s going to be found on. Then. The big thing we end the course these three assignments. So we have Assignment 1, which is the FBI career assessments, where you’re going to take the assessments yourselves. And you’re going to, you’re going to basically write a narrative. You’re going to take the easement, you’re going to post a picture of the assessment too. I know you did it and then you’re going to write a narrative with the attachment. All right. Hold on just a second. I’m sorry. Okay. So there’s five core stuff that you’re going to take which he’s going to be good. I think you’ve seen a picture of my dog, but there she is. She just little rascal, although she weighed 70 pounds. And she counts ferocious and chicken is but she’s a good dog. Okay. Paulina be the second assignment is going to be your resume, a chronological resume to one page resume, which may be a little bit different from what you guys have done before. There’s going to be a presentation by Jenna Rollins from the Career Development Center. And I actually have a recording of what she did for me in the spring semester and that’s going to be posted and you’ll have to watch that before you do your resume. Please don’t do your resume without watching her Zoom session and also looking at the resource sheets provided. It really helped me to come up with a great resume. If you don’t do a good job on your resume, I will refer you to her and you’ll have to meet with her for you to get points for that assignment. Your resume is one of the most important things you have about yourself in order to enhance your employment and your career. So it’s the first thing people see about you. And if it’s not good, they’d often get satisfied and you’d never even get an opportunity for an interview. So it’s very important that you have a good clear, concise resume. So we’re going to, you’re going to learn about that in this course and you’re actually gonna do one. And then you’re going to do a curve you with a diverse individual which has nothing to do with anyone and Human Services there anything that someone from the textbook that is someone that has challenges regarding employment, it might be that they’re of that it might be that they’re in recovery. It might be that they’re at this place work, or it might be that they’re someone going through a midlife career transition. It might be someone who is unemployed. So there’s a lot of different individuals to choose from. And what you’re trying to do is find out about their life experiences and the challenges they faced and how they’ve overcome those challenges, and how they built a career out of that. So it’s to help you to understand helping other individuals with their career, but really just by engaging someone about their career and their career story. Thought that oftentimes it extra challenges. So that’s the type of paper you’ll be doing for this course. And I’ve given you examples about all those, for all those assignments as well. So let’s go back to let’s go back to the summer schedule because I just want to lay it out to you. So you’re going to have three modules every week. The career assessments you’re going to be due at the end of week two, which is on Sunday the 11th. You’re going to have to complete all five and you’re going to have to write the narrative on all five. I’ll show you that in the second week three, we’re going to have, you’re going to have exam 1 do, and you’re going to watch jhanas. Overview of a resume and write and write a summary page on that and submit that. That way. I know you’ve watched at all and you’re going to be ready. Week 4, we’re going to do assignment three, which is the career interview with a diverse individual that is due at the end of week four. You can submit it anytime before then. And so you’ll see that assignment three actually comes to the core assignment two because this takes me longer to grade. It needs to be submitted then, so that I can get your grade back to you in during week 5, instead of at the very end. It’s worth a lot of points. So and then your resume then will be due at the end of Week 5, which will I’ll be able to grade quicker. And then the last thing you have to do with sex is a two, that’s the only thing you have. So you do all the modules in the first five weeks, okay? And manual and by Thursday of this week, completing exam two. So that’s kind of how the course is laid out. Those are the big items. Let’s look at the module here. We’re going to, I’m just going to jump into module 3. You can see there’s Darlington overview. Don’t just skip over that, please read the overview because what it’s gonna do is repetition, age, learning, and it’s going to give you terms that you’ve never heard of before. And then when you hear them later on by going through the readings, by going through the web activities or the flashcard. That’s going to reinforce that learning so that you’re going to know those terms. Okay, so read that, don’t skip the open really takes what, five minutes, read through that and then get into that, can then do the web activities, okay? And the flashcards are really there just to help you study before the quiz, make your, make sure you’re familiar with stuff. Again, the quizzes that you’re going to take, you gotta take it two times. And the highest score is the one that is going to be posted in the grade book. Okay, and then their thoughts little summary at the end to make sure that you’ve done everything in the module. Okay, let’s see. That’s the modules, also in the modules, then I put where each assignment they found, okay, so you can see in module 6, I’d label that, that’s where you’re going to get the career assessments. We jump in there. We’re going to feed, this is where we find the directions on the career assessment. Here it is. I’m going to go on there and open it. And here are the directions. I’ve given you. An example of what the finished product looks like. We’ll talk, I’ll show you that in a second. And this is one of the attachments that you’re going to need a score sheet that isn’t included. So it’s included here. Okay, So five assessments but you’re going to do is you’re going to take five different types of career assessments in this course. The first one going to look at your abilities. The next one’s going to look at interests, personality, values, and then kind of an autobiography. Then each one is going to give you a different picture of yourself and you’re taking these, but these would be assessment that you could give to someone else to help them if they’re making taking a career decision or a challenge. So ability is looking at some skill that you have. It’s like it’s their ability test the test manual dexterity. This one isn’t doing that. It’s going to test math, which is an ability either you’re strong at math or you’re not. So tunability. The second one looks at your interests. So what are you interested in and how does that relate to the world of work? The third one is going to look at personality. You’re trying to assess your personality. And depending on your personality and who you are, trying to fit you to the world of work. Kinda looking in a different piece and trying to pull it all together. The fourth one is looking at values and how values impact you and you consider work and where you want to work and we’re trying to do. And then the last one is an autobiography. So it’s much more of a narrative reflection. What it’s trying to do is pull from them of your story. The way you say things, the way you perceive things, and pull from that. What might be consistent about you and who you are related the world of work. So the fifth one is very different. It takes much more time than any of the other ones. And people either love it. It’s like their favorite one, they get the most out of it or they just circle. That didn’t do much for me. So I would say do the fifth 1 first, just so you get it out of the way cuz it’s going to take some time. Okay, so I’m going to scroll down here. You know, it’s not this is the way that you’re going to take the assessment and you’re going to answer the three questions about each one. Okay. So did the results of the assessment makes sense to me and you should have a paragraph on yes or no, or they face valid, you’re going to learn about assessment and what makes them valid or not, things like that. So youth that what you learn there to react to it when you take it doesn’t make sense in it. And then the second question or an answer is how has your, if you’re taking the ability tests, how it your math ability. Affected your success or difficulty in your jobs? I said helped you get hurt you. And then the third one, how is my ability or my personality? Whatever assessment, again, you’re relating back to the assessment on these answers has shaped your values, your or shape your future career plans to what you’re hoping to do. So yes, you must clearly integrate your assessment results and your papers. So when you do the assessment, you want to integrate that in there. I’ll show you the example paper and you’ll see, and I provided that it’s really to help you, probably sounds more complicated than this, but it’s not. So for each assessment, I’m scrolling down here, each attachment, I’m going to give you the attachment. There’s a link to it. I’m tell you what to do, print it, print it out, take it, and then reviewer adult and write a one or two-page reflection page paper about the questions that are up here, these three questions relating to it, okay? And you’re gonna do and you’re also going to submit a copy, a picture of those assessments, pages 13, 3. So you’re going to take your phone and take a picture. This is the way I know you’ve completed the assessment. If you don’t include a picture and you just write a narrative, you won’t get credit. If you only do 33 of the assessment and not the other two, you get a 0. You have to do all five assessments. You have to do all five narrative responses in order to get credit. Most people get 25 points out of this because they do. But some people get 0. Could they just do two or one? So don’t wait until Sunday of week 2 to start the assessment started today, Get him out of the white. You could submit them at the end of today and I grade them for you. And we’ll take a little bit of time though. So probably not the end of the day, but the end of this week. You don’t have to. You can do anything early in this course. You just can’t do anything like, you know, if you guys have plans to summer and you’re like, Oh, somebody getting married this I have to go to a wedding this weekend. Do your work ahead of time. That would be great. I’ll grade it for you. I’ll give you credit for it. But you can’t do that. All right. So this is the clear story workbook. You’ll go there to get the workbook and you’ll complete it. I just need to see a part of it paid to six through 14. I don’t need to see everything. Let me show you the example and that’ll help you give, give you an idea of what it’s going to look like. And then pull the silver here when it opens. Okay? So this is an example of what your paper’s going to look like. So remember there’s five attachments. So you’re going to write Assessment 1 and then you’re going to include little pictures of it. That’s the math test. Okay? And then you’re going to respond to those three questions. Secure reflection. This makes sense to me. It didn’t. How did it affect me success in past jobs or failure and past jobs talking about that, how might it shaped my future, my future plans. I’m not use plan on using math, so it’s not going to impact me or I am. And I love math and I want that to be a part of what I do. I don’t know. But again, this is a math assessment, but it could have been another attachment, like, again, some kind of ability. It could have been reading ability, it could’ve been manual dexterity, how quickly you can assemble, think so, wouldn’t it? You would have you’d be a good fit for an assembly line? I don’t know. I’m sorry. I going to let some people in the classroom. Okay. Sorry about that. Welcome to just joining us. I’m going through the assessment that we’re completing. So here’s the picture of assessment to ask, please. I’ll put them in upside down, but with that, so I know that you’ve done the assessment. And then the narrative again, all three questions are answered. Little over a page. That’s great. You could do a page and a half, but don’t do three sentences. I need more than that. Here’s the third attachment, that reflection. The fourth attachment, reflection, and the fifth assessment. Okay. Yeah. So I know you guys have done so and that again at the career assessment and that’s all. So there’s like a kind of a page for each if I can, kinda 15 pages, but it’s not exact. It’s not I’m just trying to find out that you’ve taken it and what your experience with it was, how it impacted you taking it, how that component maybe it’s helped you or hurt you in previous jobs and how you think it might help or hurt you in your future occupation. So not too challenging. But also you want to think about how I would use this attachment with other people. So this is assessment that was assessment assignment one. Assessment, once you find the career assessment, which is due week to write them are in modules. I’m going to come back out. This is where you’re going to find your chronological resume. Again, I’m going to post their resume review right after this later today so you can watch Janet’s review. You have to write a summary of it of her overview of the resume to one page. I’m going to make sure that I haven’t put the link up here, but this work, Jenna’s presentation’s going to be, as well as this preaching, the recording of this presentation. So I’ll add that as soon as she’s making silver, but, and then it’s going to be Zoom to in our course. So in order to get credit presumed to, you have to do the submission for that. All right, so we’re looking at the modules, we’re talking about the resume. And then the clear NLP papers actually going to be the second thing you do and that’s found in module 12. I’m going to scroll down their interview with a diverse individual shell. Again, I talked about this before. This is an interview with someone from one of the diverse groups mentioned in the textbook, chapter nine or 10 specifically. And I told you about those. And you guys should all have the textbook. You’re going to put it in front of my face. You could see it. And it lists different groups in there. So I talked about individuals that struggle with disability, displace workers, veteran, people, ex felon, people that suffer from addiction, homelessness. I think those are most of them. There might be a few more in there. Also the working poor boast that maybe all working but living below 200% of the poverty not so we have a lot of people in our communities that do work two or three jobs and she’ll can’t make ends meet until someone like that. So any of those people you choose to interview, the people I’ve given you specific questions to ask them. And there’s an example paper here as well so you can see what it’s like. But basically it’s going to be structured in three parts. You’re going to have your title page, who you interviewed and why, and what group from the textbook they represent. So I know that. Then you’re going to tell him one to three pages, you’re going to tell their story. And then the last page you’re going to just share your reflections. So it’s really, it’s just four pages, not including title page. You’re going to ask the questions that are found in the questions and to tell their story, telling a narrative summary of the interview that you had with them. I don’t want bullet points. I want you to write it out. Start with who they are, how you know them, why you chose them than highlighting, tell their story based on their responses to the questions. Don’t include the questions, but simply summarized information you gathered from the view and tell the story. The reader should be able to understand the interview your interviewees life influences, influencers that have impacted their career development at this point in their lives. And also share your plans for the future, as well as challenges they face and how they overcome those. And that’s the whole idea your company and understand the history and trajectory of someone’s career path. What the view is impacting their development, including opportunities, barriers, challenges, unfortunate events, how individuals have helped them along the way, what things have stayed with them that they had learned and where they have to be in their life and work five years from now. So that’s going to take at least three full pages. And then the final pages, your reflection, what you learn from that individual and how you might apply that to your future work. And it should be reflected in what you took away from the NOP, who you are, what you hope to apply in your own career may impact those that you will work with in the future. Okay, that self application is the last full piece. High shelf. Here they interview questions clear in a few questions. At the objective of the paper again, please make sure you’re following through and then just different questions you can ask them. And I would suggest you ask them so that we get all the information you need for this paper. Okay, great. And then here is an example of the paper itself. Again, most people are very successful in this course as long as they do things ahead of time and get them done. As long as they get all your assessment, then as long as they take the exams. You know, people who do poorly in the class missed banks and don’t submit that. So start tonight. Don’t put it off. Just get up to hunt. Find a time each week where you’re going to work on this course. I would prefer if that Monday so that you’d just get stuff done instead of waiting till the last minute, Sunday and then you’re like pushing that. Don’t get it done, don’t get it done.
