1.) You’ll be comparing politics in two different states/countries in the world. The
first step is to pick two states.
2.) The next step is to perform an analysis on each country separately. You should
assess the state on three levels:
a. Give a brief history of the state:
i. When did it officially become a state or gain independence?
ii. What is its current political system?
1. Who is in power and how did they achieve it?
2. Are the elections?
3. What is its relationship with the U.N. or other nations in
the world?
b. Assess the state on three levels:
i. Political Equality
ii. Economic Equality
iii. Social Equality
iv. Provide an overall summary or assessment of equality overall. If
things are unequal, try to explain the obstacles or reasons for that
inequality
3.) The next step is to compare the countries to each other:
a. Do they have similar histories, or different ones?
b. How are their current systems similar?
c. How are they different?
4.) The goal of the comparative method is to attempt to identify unifying or
universal principles of political development around the world – not just in one
country or a small group of them. If our goal is to increase democracy around
the world, what lessons can we learn from your study that may help us
understand how to increase democracy around the world?
Each paper should address each of the elements above, although it is up to you (and a bit
dependent on the states you choose to analyze) what you want to focus on and what seems
less important in your analysis. Basically, though, your paper should have 5 parts:
1.) Introduction – a summary of your paper, the cases you picked, and your basic
argument or findings (1 page)
2.) Case Study of State 1 (2-3 pages)
3.) Case Study of State 2 (2-3 pages)
4.) Comparison Between State 1 and State 2 (2-3 pages)
5.) Final Analysis and Broader Lessons for Democracy (1-2 pages)

based on their religious beliefs and practices?; Should marijuana be legalized in the
US?; Should the United States place strict limitations on immigration, whether legal or
illegal?; What should US policy be in regard China and Taiwan?; Or Russia and

Conduct research on the topic, citing at least three sources from credible and reliable

1. The United States Senate is an anti-majoritarian institution (see e.g., the existence of the filibuster and the lack of proportional representation).Regardless of your actual opinion, explain why it is good that the Senate exists as it does.
2. The President has the power to take direct actions that can impact both domestic and international policies in significant ways. Do you think that direct actions such as executive orders or pardons have given the president too much power?
3. Should Supreme Court justices serve 10-year terms instead of their current lifetime appointments?
You should only respond to one of the three prompts

Union organizing campaigns and labor actions (including strikes and work stoppa

Union organizing campaigns and labor actions (including strikes and work stoppages) have been very successful in 2021 and 2022, and Americans view unions more favorably than they have in a long time.
What will be the consequence of this, and how will it vary within states? For example, we’ve seen a bunch of Starbucks organizing campaigns succeed in Virginia, but fewer in nearby Maryland.
So you could think about what state conditions might affect the success or failure of organized labor OR how the success or failure of organized labor in a state in the next year would change political or policy outcomes. Just pick one outcome, and one or two state conditions. If you think that this surge of organizing success is just a political blip and won’t affect anything, say that, and defend it.
