You are assigned one typewritten double-spaced report this semester, which must be a
minimum of 5-8 pages. This paper will allow you to demonstrate your ability to read and
disseminate critical information. The topic of this paper is up to you, but it must be on
one of the texts read for this course. To reiterate; one of the texts read for class must be
the central focus of your research. The topic or theme within that book that you research
is up to you. Similar to the short analysis paper, you are expected to do a close analytical
reading. In conjunction with this, you will be doing research on your topic and using
outside critical sources to aid in your analysis. This is a research paper, not a book
report; do not write a summary of the text. Use a neutral, third person narration. Do not
use conversational language, personal opinion, or address the reader. You are required to
use at least three critical sources to aid in your analysis. Cliffs Notes, Spark Notes,
Gradesaver, Wikipedia, and the like are not critical sources. You are required to use peer
reviewed scholarly articles from a reputable academic source.
This is a standard college report and the format is to be as follows: a minimum of 5-8
typed pages, double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman or Calibri font, and unmodified
1” margins. The pages must also be numbered. Your paper is to be written in MLA
format, which means it must have a heading, which includes: your full name, the
professor’s name, the course number, the date, and the title of your paper. Make sure you
have a clear thesis, and properly cite all quoted material, as well have an MLA Works
Cited page, which includes the primary text used.
As a general warning:
Anyone who is caught plagiarizing automatically fails the course.

techniques in a cost benefit analysis;
• The ability to explain complex theoretical concepts in relation to their application to the
appraisal of a project;
• The ability to identify relevant academic or policy documents that should guide economists
in the evaluation of non-marketed goods or services;
• The writing style conveys technical information in an intuitive way, accessible to a non specialist reader.

Please respond to one of the following essays.
1. Marx writes as follows in The Marx-Engels Reader (p. 476):
“The bourgeoisie cannot exist without constantly revolutionizing the instruments
of production, and thereby the relations of production, and with them the whole
relations of society. Conservation of the old modes of production in unaltered form,
was, on the contrary, the first condition of all earlier industrial classes. Constant
revolutionizing of production, uninterrupted disturbance of all social conditions, everlasting uncertainty and agitation distinguish the bourgeois epoch from all earlier ones. All fixed, fast-frozen relations, with their train of ancient and venerable prejudices and opinions are swept away, all new-formed ones become antiquated before they can ossify. All that is solid melts into air, all that is holy is profaned, and man is at last compelled to face with sober senses, his real conditions of life, and his relations with his kind.”
Use this passage to reflect on dialectical materialism. Be sure to articulate the (5) five concepts that make up this engine and how they inter-relate. Be sure to use examples to illustrate your points.
2. Discuss and critically analyze Nisbet’s unit ideas of Sociology. Note the forces which gave rise to these ideas, and note how interest was expressed in these ideas. Finally, is there a certain affinity between these ideas and conservative philosophy? If so, what does this say about the nature of sociological theory?
3. Discuss and critically analyze Durkheim’s rationale, conceptualization, and explanation of religion and religious phenomena. Be sure to use examples to illustrate your points.
